If Virginia would have been invaded South Carolina and the others would help her retain her hard earned SOVEREIGNTY. Nothing more and nothing less. It was also used for diplomatic and economic reasons. A League/Confederation of Nation States carried more clout in the political world than just one Nation State. They had similar ecomonic interests. It was more appealing to sign a trade contract with a new Confederation of Nation States than just one. Seeing as they each had something to offer.

Its true. I mean the "Union" everyone thinks means and was meant to mean so much, really means very little. At least it wasnt supposed to mean a lot. Not in the way in which we identify ourselves. The "Union" came about chiefly because of extreme military necessity and mild to moderate economic necessity. Obviously the now Free colonists werent finished fighting the British in 1783. The new Nation States as they were, were in danger. It was an alliance just like between countries today.

Now people around the world hate the American Empire because they feel that if they dont trade they will get sanctions imposed on them. Plus now a days it doesnt look good to say no to an Empire most others are bowing down to.

You do have have a point here, the concept of governing a massive piece of land using only one leader/government is quite strange and it has never really worked throughout history. At the same time, we can not create new states all the time... the only way out must be to abandon capitalism.
