"Send in the Clowns" is a ballad from Act II of Sondheim's "A Little Night Music" in which the character Desir ée reflects on the ironies and disappointments of her life. Among other things, she regrets having turned down a marriage offer 20 years earlier. Meeting him after so many years, she finds that he is now in an unconsummated marriage. She proposes to marry him, to rescue him from this situation, but he declines. Reacting to his rejection of her, she sings the song.

With no intention to disparage the many great voices who have also lent their talents to this tremendous song, no one tops Judy for the fragility and vulnerability in her voice as she eloquently brings life to Send In The Clowns.

I read somewhere ...( 1 week ago by WawangWili)
I read somewhere that it was written by an old couple and they dedicated the song to one another. The song won a grammy back then as the best song. Forgot what year it was.
Not sure where you ...( 1 week ago by tomlillis)
Not sure where you read that, but that isn't the case. This is the work of American musical theater great Stephen Sondheim, originally written for "A Little Night Music."
The song is about a couple who broke up meeting again many years later. Well, it's more complicated than that, but explaining it here in detail seems foolish. Google is your friend.
It did win a Grammy, anyhow. This version by Judy Collins, in fact, two or three years after the musical it comes from was produced. FYI.
This information ...( 1 week ago by WawangWili)
This information was a little less than 30 years ago. I was watching a tv show back then when the couple was credited with the song. Yes! I have read from a lot of sources that the song was written by Stephen Sondheim, but I can still picture in my mind and hear the sounds of those voices when they were introduced. Yet I may be wrong.
