With dismal approval ratings in congress and the White House it is great to see someone with so much influence continue to demonstrate principle and character for all of us.
Inspiring! The ... ( 9 months ago by utubeaaxs)
Inspiring! The more we see of Clarence Thomas the more firmly we come to understand the utter and unmitigated moral bankruptcy of those on the left that continue to slander him. He radiates a calm, humble and genuine character. We citizens are privileged to have this man serving on the highest court of our land.
Justices vary ... ( 9 months ago by getplaning)
Justices vary widely in their inclination to strike down Congressional laws. Justice Clarence Thomas is the most inclined, voting to invalidate 65.63 percent of those laws, Justice Stephen Breyer, is the least, voting to invalidate 28.13 percent.
Thomas 65.63 %
Kennedy 64.06 %
Scalia 56.25 %
Rehnquist 46.88 %
O'Connor 46.77 %
Souter 42.19 %
Stevens 39.34 %
Ginsburg 39.06 %
Breyer 28.13 %

Justices often considered more "liberal" - Justices Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, David Souter and John Paul Stevens - vote least frequently to overturn Congressional statutes, while those often labeled "conservative" vote more frequently to do so. At least by this measure, the latter group is the most activist.

huh? if the statute is unconstitutional there's nothing activist about overturning it. Of course the liberals don't overturn Congress often, they believe in a centralized gov't and aren't concerned with the erosion of federalism. learn what FDR did to the constitution and then maybe you'll get it.
Of court Thomas is ... ( 9 months ago by birdyb24)
Of court Thomas is most inclined to - he thinks the way the Constitution was originally intended and how COngress operated up until 1933 was the right way. There's be a huge departure since then and that is why he is often against the imperial congress.
The brilliance of ... ( 9 months ago by birdyb24)
The brilliance of Thomas is reflected in his ability to say these very simple words, "I don't know." The wisest among uus is he who knows he knows nothing. (paraphrased Socrates quote). In a world where everyone is running around with their hair on fire and a "solution" for every "problem", Thomas brings us back to the time-tested proven basics.

Yes, by 1937, Roosevelt had convinced the US Supreme Court that there was merit to his ideas, as they began famously undoing decisions of the previous 32 years that had left so many Americans vulnerable to the economic downturn of the Great Depression. The Court picked up the pace of undoing the damage with the appointment of Chief Justice Earl Warren.
When Nixon took ... ( 9 months ago by getplaning)
When Nixon took office, he appointed four members to the Court, and the most conservative of them, Rehnquist, began an aggressive process of dismantling the pro-rights decisions of the Court's previous thirty-plus years. This conservative Supreme Court has swung us hard-right back toward the feudal society overseen by McKinley, Coolidge, and Hoover.

Why is it that, when I hear Mr Thomas talking about "cute slurs" and bringing kids up not yelling and screaming, the people who come to my mind are the likes of Ann Coulter and the hysterical right wing shock jocks who seem to be destroying reasonable discourse in the USA today
There is no general ... ( 7 months ago by etsneroj)
There is no general inclination to striking down statutes per se. Virtually all the statutes struck down by this court were passed by a Democratic Congress, so its not surprising that liberal justices were more likely to upheld them.

Thank God for Justice Thomas! Great speech ... and it's a great book. May you sit on the court for many years to come!

I feel proud that our men are fighting to defend our empire from the evil people in these third worlds countries who dont want to sell their oil to us. Now the iraqis are free to elect a government that we approve of and are free to sell their oil to us and not others. And we will protect them from electing a free government that will build an economy that will help the ordinary people. We have to be proud of our men who sacrifice themselves for the good of the impoverished corporate elite.

Clerence in my opinion is an anti black conservative in black skin. I bet he marries a white woman to increase his chance of success and gain acceptance amongst white people. This guy is a true hypocrite, after he benefiting from the civil rights movement, he is now working hard to end everything that have helped black people including himself in the past.

I like Thomas's respect for neutrality and his steadfastness to what he believes is correct despite of his race. However, his view is miopic. First, as a justice, he does policy, whether he likes it or not. Second, his policy cannot assume that the playing field for the races in the US is even. Beyond personal merit, some people were forced to be inferior for a very long time. The field must be evened out before equalit and neutrality can be established. He may be sincere but seems to be unwise.
