My vent about how my ASL is being judged... especially by hearing people.
*** Rough summary: My ASL usually are picked on-- because I slipped and used some SEE/PSE signs... and it often happens to be from HEARING people who throw a tantrum "Omg, WHAT IS THAT?! ARE YOU SIGNING THAT WAY JUST BECAUSE I AM HEARING?! SHAME ON YOU!"... Why? Why are they throwing a fit? Beca
use they see ASL as a "beautiful poetic language being done with gracefully hands"... (gagging). And also many of hearing people did take a REAL ASL CLASS-- academic and formal education. So they always carry this "I KNOW ALL ABOUT ASL, AND YOU DON'T, PITY ON YOU, yOU LITTLE DEAF MAINSTREAMED KID!"
wisp around them.... And I am sick of them. They are oppressing Deaf poeple if they look down on mainstreamed/oral/HoH/et cetera... They are taking advantage of the fact that they HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE ASL-- and we the Deaf people didn't have the opportunity until, possibly in colleges-- or
NEVER. I recollected in my high school, I attempted to sign up for ASL but my teacher-for-deaf objected and claimed that I am too smart and already an expert on ASL. So.. i had my opportunityt taken away. Just like every other Deaf person who wants to polish up their ASL skills. Just like you hear
ing people-- you do take English class just to polish up your ENlgish. So.... if you are a hearie and you are a learner of ASL-- don't you dare mocking a Deaf person's signs. Don't you dare looking down at a Deaf person just because they were taught different signs. (And it is usually because of he
aring poeple! GASP!) So this is my little bitch session toward hearing interpreters, hearing ASL teachers, hearing ASL researchers and hearing CODAs who threw tantrums. Screw you. I am Deaf. That is enough. I don't need to take your crap just because you went to a fancy school. At least I am LIVIN
G it... **** sorry about the quality of the video. THis is my worst video ever, so I give you my deepest apology for bad lighting, blurry signs, but I cannot even repeat my emotions so I decided to just go ahead with this video that I made weeks ago because for me, this video is RAW. And raw is go
od for you. :-)

Bravo! It is high time for Deaf students, kids or adults to learn thier own language with structures, synax, all those linguistic grammericall stuff to apprreciate thier language and shall express gracefully and self esteem will be enriched. it is true learning experience when I learned for myself as deaf blind interpreter for a deafblind client who was taking his asl class!

That's right GIRL! I know, they can't judge us, i mean, we never took asl classes and I learned how to sign when I was like 3 years old. So yea, i just cheat by using ASL and SEE at the same time. So The hearing people who "knows asl" whatever. they need to just Back OFF! jeez. But at the end Deaf People are always right, because we're actually the experts at Signing haha!

I cannot live without ASL. You must be a very strong person to live without ASL. :-) Must be quite a struggle.

You're so right. ... ( 1 year ago by gfishie)
You're so right. Hearing people take English to polish their skills so why not ASL too? It's bunch of BS. I grew up with ASL but also grew up orally, but I had taken ASL to learn the rules and grammar skills so I can be able to sign ASL properly. People just think they're better than others just because they had formal education (this is true with everything else, not just ASL only). You said it well, I'm impressed.

I ran across you video and think that you have a very good point. I take English courses even though I already know it, its just clarifies what you know. When a deaf individual uses a sign that I don't know, or that may not be ASL, I take it as an opportunity to expand upon what I know and what I want to learn. I am sorry to know that people act like that.

Wow, you did very well for this information, I love to listen about your stories.
I am from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, I use under my wife's name. I also the one of hard time to fight for justice for the deaf, which still dont work out regarding the unprofessianl matters at all for a whole 10 years! So a finaly I was told "Better... let go and move on! Robert

Hi. I'm taking ASL courses to oneday become an interpreter or teach ASL. I think you should sign whatever you feel like signing. In my opinion, any type of sign whether its SEE/PSE/ASL/SIGN ENLGISH whatever, its all beautiful. Communication is communication, as long as you understand each other, that is perfect. Keep your head up and you sign all you feel like signing!

Agreed! We Deaf ... ( 1 year ago by Irish1856)
Agreed! We Deaf should know OUR ASL. So we would sign better ASL grammar, handshapes, etc. When I saw the comments on DeafJokes' vlogs, I was sadden to see many comments that they don't understand ASL. I believe we ALL are required to take ASL and linguistics during middle/high school, maybe even elementary.

i agree. Its like - hh/deaf and signing for 15 yrs... hearie signing for one and a half...
who trumps who?
I orininally learned just signed english which EVERYBODY understands - there just a few extra words in there and now... grade 10, the decide to force me to sign grammatically correct, asl, TO THE HEARIE

I am a hearing person, studying to become an Interpreter, and I agree with you 100% ASL is your language, and how ever a deaf person chooses to use it is up to that person, and that is correct.

i admire your strong character- i am Deaf myself too and a freshman in college- i grew up in an ASL-fluent Deaf family and it angers me when that happens. I am going to take ASL class at college because i WANT to learn my own language's rules

Same principle as Spanish for native speakers here in Texas (and beyond). I'm a non-Hispanic, but fluent in Spanish; Hispanic friends have told me they wished they had the classroom Spanish to strengthen what they learned in the home.
BTW, I hear, am starting to learn ASL at age 50. Very glad to find the YouTube ASL community.

Even though I'm deaf I still don't understand deaf people who sign ASL, I had given up on signing ASL when I was little as forced to learn how to sign English instead.

I ran into this vid ... ( 1 year ago by pixl8edkat)
I ran into this vid as well, and watched it... i didn't know deaf/HoH people were frowned upon so much for their half and half ASL signs. i agree - if that's your language, it should be as exceptable as say my using "Franglish" (lol) to say something half in French and half in English b/c i don't know the word... i get what you mean, and don't blame you for being pissed. we have no right to tell you how to sign since it's *your* language. and we have no right to be high and mighty.
i definitely agree ... ( 1 year ago by dallasrbd)
i definitely agree with u! I am deaf. i attended to high school, i took class which required for 2 years of foreign language. One problem thing that an ASL teacher doesn't fluent ASL. She graduated with certification of ASL but she doesn't definitely become ASL professional! i still want to want to learn more about ASL, facial expression, and etc. i so love ur ASL, it's extremely incredible!!!!

You gave up or were you forced to give up ASL? I don't understand either when deaf people use SEE. It is just too awkward for me to watch, IMO. But I am all for different strokes-- to each their own.

I agree with you ... ( 1 year ago by Salticid68)
I agree with you that we should take ASL class. I'm fluency in ASL, but I don't know how to use facial expression which is somewhat equivalent to hearing people's voice tone. Some certified interpreters are too arogant. When I noticed wrong signs they were using, I helped to correct. They said nothing and didn't change their error. For god's sake, I grew up being deaf.
I don't agree with ... ( 1 year ago by Salticid68)
I don't agree with people who believe that teachers should use PSE or SEE to help us improving our English skill. Metalinguistic is key to our learning and understanding. For example, if you take a Japanese class and you have a teacher who are bad in English, you won't learn much. That teacher has to know fluency in both English and Japanese.
A question from a ... ( 1 year ago by warbread)
A question from a curious hearing person: What are your thoughts on hearies who say they're learning ASL, but really just use a lot of SEE and mouthing? That's mostly what I've seen in my area and I've worked really hard over the years trying to avoid SEE as much as possible. What sort of standards do you hold hearing ASL students to?
