It's a great speech by Sagan. Oddly enough just a couple of days I read it myself while surfing Wikipedia. I'm actually interested in how the singularity will impact space travel. After we're all online (you know what I mean) what's the need to travel to new places? Of course we need redundancy and a new home in about 4 billion years. It will be interesting when we (and I mean we) watch the sun turn into a red giant.

I'll be talking about this in a future video. We probably won't have space travel, after we leave meatspace, since a trip to the moon would take, subjectively, millions of years.
We will indeed. I would hazard a guess this universe, as we know it, would not harbor our existence beyond a certain time, merely because this universe no longer meets our desires.

So are you also considering the possibility of multiple universes? My favorite Science Fiction series was centered around that idea. Did you ever watch the show "Sliders?"

I'm no physicist, but the beings we evolve into will have, compared to us, infinite resources and infinite knowledge and intellect. Wouldn't it be plausible for them to manipulate the universe to their desires?

Oh, yeah, I remember that show, "Sliders," now. Saw just one or two episodes, and thought it was good.

Cool, I haven't read it yet, about the only thing he wrote that I've not read. 'spose I should scare up a copy.

I've considered the idea of multiple universes quite a bit regarding the singularity because assuming an ever expanding universe, eventually what's called the "big freeze" will happen and once there's no power to do computations it would mean the end for us, unless there are other universes that we can escape to. Of course we're probably talking about some 30 billion+ years into the future.

excellent video. Thanks for sharing it. Carl Sagan is so refreshingly rational, but also had such an admirable apprecation for the grandness of things and keen insight into the absurdity of many others.
