The Egyptian (1954), Edmund Purdom, with Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, Gene Tierney, Bella Darvi
This segment: Speech for the Ages. This is very loosely based on The Story of Sinuhe, which does include references to Aten but was written many centuries before the 18th dynasty. Sets, costumes, and props from this film were bought and re-used by Cecil B. DeMille for The Ten Commandments. As
the events in that story take place seventy years after those in The Egyptian, this re-use creates an unintended sense of continuity. The commentary track on the Ten Commandments DVD points out many of these re-uses. Only two actors, Mimi Gibson and John Carradine, and a handful of extras, appeared
in both pictures. The Prince Aly Khan was a consultant during filming, he was engaged to Gene Tierney. (less)

Take heed all that would build empires. This is arguably one of the best videos on Youtube.

One reason why empires fail is that they become too expensive to maintain. As government led consumption of the nation's wealth increases as a result of war, bread and circuses, etc., it looks to foreign conquest for new revenues. So, instead of giving citizens a larger share of the domestic pie, the size of the whole pie is enlarged by annexing foreign lands or collecting tribute: Egypt, Rome, the Ottomans and Britain. The nation's power collapses along with its currency. I wonder who is next.

Hey, those look like Saluki hunting dogs carved into that wall behind the throne. Hollywood's art department finally got something right. Hail Southern Illinois University! Plus some great Elmer Bernstein-composed music. Victor "Manure" uses his wooden delivery to good effect showing how incompetents rise to the supreme office in the land. Sinuhe's speech goes in one ear and out the other, of course, as it always does when truth is spoken to power. Things haven't changed much in 3000 years...

The great Akhenaten, whose memory the Egyptians priests tried to eradicate, and whose existence was discovered only in 1922 A.D. I love this movie, despite its flaws.

I first saw this on the NBC Saturday Night Movie in 1962. I loved the music and the story and immediately read the book. I could never understand why so few people had ever heard of this film when a great director like Michael Curtiz had made it. I later learned that it was originally to have starred Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe. It really bugs me that the American Film Institute always honors the same "usual suspect" top 100 films and ignores unique and wonderful films like The Egyptian.

Yes. He was a greatly deformed man physically but through his belief in God and his approach to monotheism, he was later called one of the most powerful pharohs ever to live. At one point Egypt had over 2000 dieties but only a few ever saw one.

I bought the LP (vinyl) soundtrack in 1977 and it was utterly mesmerizing. I listened to it many many times before finally donating it to a local library just before moving away.
The brief musical excerpt heard here is nothing but execrable in comparison to the purity of sound on the LP.
