Luke Kelleys' was great but the song and poem are so good there are many great versions. Mr. Knopfler just seems sound as pound on the ground. Talent and humility and respect for the music. No feigned class.

I'm sorry Dylanesque, but it's beyond me how you can claim that Luke Kelly was overrated.
Luke sang with more power, passion and empathy than any other singer i've ever heard.
His version of Raglan Road has never been bettered, and probably never will be.

What the fuck is wrong with him? Its like he is afraid of it! You can see he is just playing the song to the chords but without any passion what so ever. Maybe if he listened to luke a few more times and p[layed it on his own a few more times the melody would come through to him. But this is petetic.

Luke Kelly sings it wonderfully but the best i ever heard sang it is FINBAR WRIGHT the Irish tenor. Makes the hair stand on the back of your neck . Unfortunately its not on You Tube.

While he seems to understand the emotion behind the song, I don't think he conveys it very well. The key to achieving the haunting mood in this song is the use of legato and sustained notes. Kelly perfects it and Mary Blacks version is good too but Knopfler just seems to punch out every phrase. Some nice alternative chords though.
