Mike Phillips is an ... ( 10 months ago by bellaalma)
Mike Phillips is an extremely talented player. I had the pleausre of seeing him live at Prince's 3121 Jazz restaurant playing real jazz. The brotha is the real deal. He played Miles Davis' "Footprints" and killed it. That clip does not tell the story.

This guy has amazing soul and talent. He reminds me of Everette Harp or Gerald Albright. WOW!!!
Why is everyone ... ( 9 months ago by skybo053)
Why is everyone getting on this guy about how what he's playing isn't "real" jazz? Despite that being subjective, he is playing whatever he has to to pay the bills. If playing that is what he has to do to make a living playing music, thats what he's going to do. Plus, it doesn't hurt to be well rounded in terms of playing styles.

Boney may not have the technice, but he has a the sound and soul, wich I'm planing to copy I like boney's sound but I like gerald albright, kenny G, and Jakiem Joyners technique, dont get me wrong, that theese players have soul and techneque, but boey approaches things a bit different when he improvises
look man you jazz ... ( 5 months ago by CannonballPhil)
look man you jazz purish seem to not want jazz to evolve at all, those saxophonist you mention are good, but you have to think about the younger generation, and what is popular among us younger musicians, people dont want to hear straight ahead and bebop as much as it was popular back then,
why so sensitive? i ... ( 5 months ago by rhumbaphone)
why so sensitive? i grew up listening to and imitating r&b saxophone players just like most of you young wipper snappers but now that i'm 127 years older i've discovered that there is more to the evolution of jazz than playing 5 notes over and over and over...did i mention over...my memory isn't what it used to be...dumb ass!

jazz IS evolving. ... ( 4 months ago by rhumbaphone)
jazz IS evolving. but playing R&B on a saxophone doesn't make it "jazz". It makes it R&B on the saxophone. check out chris potter, kenny garrett, steve wilson, bob reynolds, michael brecker, bill evans(sax),joshua redman, steve coleman, ravi coletrane, christopher hollyday...etc all great and innovative and relatively young. some play lots o notes others don't. but the innovation is there. phillips may play well, but he's not really innovating nor evolving.there's nothing wrong with what he does

But you're focusing on only 30 seconds of him playing. Have you ever heard him play Giant Steps ? Footprints ? So What ? A Night In Tunisia ? ... I guess you haven't, because you wouldn't say the same thing after that. Michael Brecker even said that he was" Mike Phillips's biggest fan", word, go on his myspace if U don't believe me.
