what a buildup! If Carol Channing had not been there from the start, she would have materialized from wherever she was in the world, just by sheer inevitability.

I think at the time the film was shot, Barbra Streisand was too young to credibly play an elderly widow, now she would probably fit better to the role. But of course she could never be as good as Carol Channing.

What year was this? Carol is absolutely the best. In her late eighties she still has it. I'm thinking this is early 2000's.

Carole is the ... ( 2 weeks ago by giagia282)
Carole is the perfect Dolly. Even though Barbra Streisand was properly aged for the movie she can't stand with the strenght and the creepy voice of Mrs. Burnett. She's really the greatest Dolly Levy ever! And her monologue before the parade passed by speaks clearly Barbra was way to young and way too perfect to do that! The medley is adorable! 100% musical magic! Thanks for posting!
Burnett? Surely ... ( 2 weeks ago by CPCIC)
Burnett? Surely you mean "Channing". Carol Burnett would probably have made an interesting Dolly . . . but, to my knowledge, she never played the role.
Ups Channing, ... ( 2 weeks ago by giagia282)
Ups Channing, you're right You know I'm a Julie Andrews lover and I knew Channing in "Thoroughly Modern Millie". Since Burnett was a usual guest in Julie's television shows I made a mistake. XD Sorry, Mrs. Channing! YOU are the best!

The more I think about it, the more I wish Carol Burnett had played Dolly Levi. She's just phenomenal at everything she does and that would have been something to see.
Actually, Dolly can ... ( 2 weeks ago by GoodbyeToBlueberyPie)
Actually, Dolly can be played at just about any age, you just have to make sure that the actor playing Horrace is comparable in years. The role, don't forget, was originally written for and offered to Ethel Merman in 1966, when she was 58, and when she took over the show she was well over 60. That suggests to me that Herman meant for Dolly to be around that age. I think Barbara was just too young for the role.
Sorry I meant 1964. ... ( 2 weeks ago by GoodbyeToBlueberyPie)
Sorry I meant 1964. I was thinking about "Mame" which was in 1966. Lorna's tribute to Lyndon Johnson reminded me as the song was used in his campaign, and tat was of course in 1964. So Merman would have been 56.
