What I love about ... ( 2 months ago by wouryelcome)
What I love about this song is when it came out on "Mars Hotel" in '74, it seemed like instant nostalgia for the Summer of Love seven years earlier. Anybody else think so?

guys, this is my first time ever listening to the Greatful Dead - don't worry, just from this song I'm checking out their entire collection - and from what I've gathered, that bitch who sauntered on stage really needs to never sing again... seriously

77 was a really great year for the band I think. Everyone was really spot on.

clue, i meant that the city might not have given them a dance permit for that hall...and that the city officials were the assholes. things were weird back then...dance permits...too funny.

The Capitol Theater in Passaic, all right. Didn't see the dead there but did see Zappa there in 1974. What a dump. Great music always rises above. Ain't nuthin wrong...
Pycell, you show ... ( 2 months ago by ClueSign)
Pycell, you show real potential as a discerning GD fan! In this phase the Dead thought they needed a high-harmony singer: instead they got this ear-splitting screacher. In 1979, they fired Donna (singer) and spouse Keith ( a decent keyboardist, but a serious drug addict) and procured Brent Mydland, who, before he imploded several years later, gave them a Two-For-One-Discount: nice keyboards and tuneful high harmony. That, my child, concludes your Dead lesson for today. Quiz tomorrow.

LOL.... I think you might mean RIP Pigpen: Ronald C. "Pigpen" McKernan (September 8, 1945 March 8, 1973). Yeah, the Dead live on, but not exactly like that. Keith Godchaux replaced Pigpen in the band, and his wife Donna was brought in as well.
Sauntered, lol. ... ( 1 month ago by Ascentia)
Sauntered, lol. Yeah, she did that well at least. Folk who love the Godchaux period of the Dead defend Donna's singing to the death, and much has been written. Her questionable performances were supposedly due to sexism on the part of the band, as they wouldn't give a (mere) woman the proper sound equipment so that she could hear herself singing. I dunno.

high harmony. yes less off key than Donna. yes tuneful. hardly
Okay, I'm not ... ( 1 month ago by dkalnyc21)
Okay, I'm not defending Keith and Donna, but the late 70's was my favorite era. After they took their little break in '75, they got rid of the wall of sound and started playing in smaller venues. They were extremely tight by then, and performed some of the most incredible shows.
I love Brent, but ... ( 1 month ago by dkalnyc21)
I love Brent, but something happened to them in the '80s, I just can't explain. They just weren't as spectacular. I do agree that Donna's screeching may have ruined some songs, which btw, Ascentia, no equipment in the world could have cured! Do I pass the quiz, ClueSign?
What happened to ... ( 1 month ago by ClueSign)
What happened to them in the 80s was that Jerry became a smack addict (smoking Persian) and checked out qualitatively on the deepest level. He was there, but not there in the old way. People like Brent and other "guests" had to come in and pick up the tab. (Yes, good quiz responses Dkalynyc21...)
I agree. Once ... ( 1 month ago by dkalnyc21)
I agree. Once Jerry went downhill, there was nothing Bob, Phil, Brent, Mickey & Bill could do. Jerry did make a comeback in the late 80s after his near death ordeal. I can remember some hot shows at MSG, Spectrum & RFK, but he quickly went back to old habits and you know the rest...
