I don't know how it's like in the Rolling Stones but, touring isn't necessity for the money. I think the answer for that question is the most simple and natural and it's just one word, the fans.
It's what should make any band touring, not the money, the fans. Don't you think?

I'm not sure if I get what you're trying to say with your uppercased 'rock'. Rolling Stones was really pop-influenced, despite their bluesy style. By the way, Maroon 5 has toured with them. Their albums ARE heavily produced, but not overproduced, and they always live up to their records when playing live. Furthermore, they wouldn't make it into the charts with a "four on the floor RnB", unless we were still in the '70s. That's why they've embraced so much hard work in the studio.
