In July of 1969, America sent the first humans to the moon. Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins were aboard the mission named Apollo 11.
The launch vehicle they rode, the Saturn 5 rocket, is still the most powerful machine ever built. It generated almost 8 million pounds of thrust and even after nearly 40 years, it is the only vehicle that has carried men beyond earth's gravity.
Watch it now, as you would have seen it on July 16, 1969, at 9:26 AM EDT. T-minus 00:5:59 and counting.

It was amazing. I wish I could have seen it. Actually, the Saturn V was longer than a football field, 365 feet. If you watch the video closely, there is a time when the flame is three or four times the length of the rocket. That would be about a quarter mile !

That would be fun to ride on a rocket like that but a person would have to have nuts as big as bowling balls to do it, because it would be risky now and surely then. They were defiantly some brave guys. I was two when this happened.

I believe that after the success of the Apollo program, NASA had a Mars program in place that would have seen humans on the surface of mars by 1983. As you say, a great shame that the momentum was lost....

Yeah, I realize ... ( 3 months ago by jimnxsq)
Yeah, I realize many, if not most, viewers aren't old enough to remember any of the great Apollo launches. Obviously, Apollo 11 was launched during the summer vacation and I watched the launch at home, but most of the others were launched during the school year and most school rooms nationwide would have a TV set in the room to watch all the live coverage. There was great drama for all missions because each was more dangerous than the missions that came before.

Thank you SO MUCH for putting this up. My father made sure that I watched both the launch of Apollo 11 and also Neil Armstrong taking the first steps on the Moon.
When Armstrong was going down the ladder, my father told me and my brother "Be sure you remember this moment because it's the most important thing that will happen in your lives". Thanks again jimnxsq for bringing a bit of my childhood back.

I won't be the same, but I do look forward to the planned new moon landings - finally, my generation has progressed to where you were in 1969. x)
