Since its discovery a quarter of a century ago, the Mandelbrot Set has become a universal icon for the doctrine of chaos--the emerging scientific idea that simple processes can result in infinite complexity.
It's the set of all complex numbers z for which sequence defined by the iteration
z(0) = z, z(n+1) = z(n)*z(n) + z, n=0,1,2, ... remains bounded. This means that there is a number B such that the absolute value of all iterates z(n) never gets larger than B. A bounded sequence may or not have a limit. For example, if z=0 then z(n) = 0 for all n, so that the limit of the (
1) is zero. On the other hand, if z=i ( i being the imaginary unit), then the sequence oscillates between i and i-1, so remains bounded but it does not converge to a limit. I don't believe in God but I'm very interested in her. -Arthur C. Clarke Music, Pink Floyd: A Momentary Lapse Of Reason-Sign
s Of Life.

Take any point Z in ... ( 1 year ago by Orenotter)
Take any point Z in the complex plane. Square it and add Z. Do this again and again. If the number goes off to infnity, color it according to how fast it goes. If it stays, it's part of the mandelbrot set and is usually colored black. This is what produces the images you see here. These shapes all lie between -2, 2, i and -i.

It's amazing, isn't it...in my philosophy class once we spent an entire 3-hour class session discussing the Mendelbrot equation and its hypothesized influence on nature, the growth pattern of plants, etc. even supposed randomized events that occur all around us. I'm not sure if I believe all that, but it's just too tempting not to think about. It blows my mind how the simplest of mathematical equations can be this profound.

Well, that's the question! All those images are created by a very simple equation: z_1 = z^2 + c.
The insanity is that that simple equation creates literally an infinitely complex and beautiful object. What _does_ it mean? What do you think it means?
