he didn't. this song was originally on EVOL which was released in 1987. Malkmus' original band Pavement wasn't formed until 1989, remained relatively unknown until their breakthrough album in 1992. the only guest musician on EVOL was Mike Watt who played bass and back up vocals on the track "bubblegum".

During the Lollapalooza tour of 1995, where both Pavement and Sonic Youth played... Steve Malkmus was noted to do vocals with SY on Expressway, this occured at least once (and maybe more) definitly happened at the last show of the tour at Molsen Park in Barrie, Ontario (Toronto)...
