I remember back in the 80's hearing about this as a kid. I thought it was kind of interesting how one guy with a satellite dish and some equipment could completely override HBO's signal. I think the guy ended up getting busted and several some federal prison time too. I think maybe someone he worked with ratted him out to the FCC or something. There was also a guy that did something like this to The Playboy Channel's signal shortly after this incident.

John R. MacDougall, a satellite TV dealer in Ocala, Florida, was working at Central Florida Teleport, a company that uplinks services to satellites. At the end of his shift, he swung the dish back in to its storage position, pointing directly upward which happened to be the location of Galaxy 1. MacDougall was charged and plea bargained a $5,000 fine and was placed on one year's probation. MacDougall now owns MacDougall Electronics, a satellite dish dealership, in Ocala, Florida.

My dad remembers this happening - I asked him about it last year.
I wonder if anyone actually caught this on tape while that movie was airing on that night? Weird stuff!

I was in 7th grade when it happened. My Dad had been taping it, but got annoyed by the message and rewound it to the beginning. (And it was taped over eventually.) It was on late and I was probably in bed by then. :) I had never seen the actual test pattern message, until just deciding to look it up on Google. I never realized it was an east coast back - for some reason I thought just our local cable company was hit. (Upstate NY)

I live in South Jersey, but I was living in Central Jersey at the time, and was about four years old, so I don't remember it, but it definitely harkens back to the Max Headroom incident, though this was prior to that - my mom says she remember a "specific Max Headroom incident," but I was just telling her about it.
It's amazing how slow the programmers were at reacting to this incident, but it does make for a great historical, if not infamous, TV moment of the '80s.
