You'd get them acquainted or else when the ferret grows and catches a whiff of the rat scent, you can say goodbye to your beloved rat. The ferret will go berserk and do everything to kill the rat. They've been known to break into rats cages and decimate them.

Dude, don't buy an animal if you don't understand it. Pet stores will sell you the cute little furry thing without caring if you can be a good owner. If you had done any research at all and talked to some knowledgable ferret owners first, you would have known that small rodents like rats were the prey of their wild ancestors and the domesticated ferret that was bred from them. At least you knew to supervise them first. At that age, there's still a chance the ferret was only playing.

While I'm glad I didn't get the rat snuff film I thought this was going to be, are you retarded? If these are both your pets, keep them separated! If the baby ferret was a baby boa would you have done the same lil experiment? And even if no harm came to the rat in this instance, trust me it has issues now! It's blood pressure hit a similar level to what yours would have done if forced to swim with sharks while naked, handcuffed and smeared in pork drippings.

Now that just doesn't work, any better than bringing a baby lion and a baby gazelle up together in the same cage. Ferrets are great pets -- I have 7 -- but they never get over their basic instincts. It's not like dogs and cats. This goes beyond natural enemies -- one animal considers the other its natural prey and the other is constantly terrified as a result.
