I think Rod was known. I'm sure people in the know took notice when he was with Jeff Beck.
If I'm retelling the story correctly, I believe it was Kenny Jones who suggested that Rod give vocals a try for them during a rehearsal that Woodsy took him too.
I would say talent took notice of talent.
Regardless of where Rod's career took him after Faces, no denying he was an attraction with a unique and awesome voice.

agree: saw this band live in February 1971 and Rod was a great showman and frontman. whatever he became, he had a great talent to entertain and this band worked hard. when i saw them, the evening was supposed to be separate early and late shows, but due to snow, the 2d show was cancelled, so the faces played an extended single set, probably close to 3 hours, seeming to enjoy every minute of it. the audience sure did-

Didn't know that that was how it happened. Apparently, had Jeff Beck not been in a bad car crash in 1969/70 then Rod wouldn't have left the Jeff Beck Group after Ron had, and Jeff and Rod would have formed another Jeff Beck Group with Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice (of Vanilla Fudge, the latter being Rod's drummer for D'ya Think I'm) rather than Jeff forming his Motown Jeff Beck Group and Rod joining the Faces. Beck added Bogert and Appice to his group in 1972 and then "Beck, Bogert and Appice"
