It's really quite a pity that Julie Andrews was passed over for this role which she made famous when it came to the movie version. Oh well...

No. Julie was ... ( 1 month ago by chocolatesouljah)
No. Julie was simply passed up after much discussion. Even Rex Harrison wasn't a sure thing. They asked people like Carey Grant but he insisted they cast Rex Harrison. Julie was cast in "The Sound..." because Robert Wise had seen her in "My Fair Lady" and her star was rising due to "Camelot" and Mary Poppins so she got the role.

Hepburn did a fine job in the movie, but I really think that stars in a musical should sing for themselves (excepting the bio-pic of course). Plus, Hepburn had 0 chemistry with Harrison. I think Andrews is so feisty and funny that she would've been great in the part.

Thank you for posting this amazing clip of theatre history. It looks like it was pulled from a documentary, but this performance, I believe, was on the Ed Sullivan Show.

I basically agree. In this clip anyway, I couldn't buy the cockney accent. It was so obviously put-on, and switched on and off every other word. Hepburn managed to pull it off more naturally and consistently. I love Julie Andrews, but she's so instinctively refined that this part just didn't work, in my opinion.

I luv Julie & Audrey.Problem is some fans felt indignant & wanted to defend Julie's "stolen" role. Also because Marnie's voice is needed they think Audrey is inferior for the movie. The powers-to-be should have left Audrey's voice for the flower girl scene. Watch the DVD special features; read the original play; watch Wendy Hiller 1938 version before critizing Audrey's 0 chemistry with Harrison. Judge what's best for the movie & not trying to see who's better. Imagine Julie singing rock music!

So, she got "passed over" for My Fair Lady and wound up as Maria in the sound of Music or was it Mary Poppins. Anyhow, she didn't have to apply for unemployment.

Mary Poppins and she won an Academy Award over the part Audrey Hepburn who got her part in MFL. ;-) I bet the producers were kicking themselves.

I love both Julie and Audrey but what's done is done. Obviously being passed over for this role didn't hurt Julie considering she's now a living legend of film and theatre. At least we have some footage of Julie's performance - it's better than nothing.

both audrey and andrews did a great job, both performences captured the character of Eliza doolittle, and have made their marks in history

I think that Audrey Hepburn acted the part of Eliza Doolittle perfectly, and even if she couldn't sing it I think Marni Nixon sang it as well as Andrews did. I loved the movie and although I have the Broadway Cast Recording with Julie Andrews-- I don't really prefer one to the other-- they're both amazing.

Actually, the first half of Just You Wait, and the beginning of I Could Have Danced All Night is Audrey's voice, and she sang entirely for herself in Funny Face.

i Personally think Julie was better for t'role of Eliza, much as i adore audrey too. They were both legends but good at different things...Like Audrey was better for the role of Holly Golightly for example! I Love Julie & im soooo happy we have this footage =D

While Julie andrews certainly had the voice (Marnie Nixon was not chopped liver) She would have never had the screen presence of Audrey Hepburn. I'm a hgue Julie andrews fan. But, they made the correct choice.
