I've always found Abbado solid, you're right. Not inspired, but solid. I'll have to get my hands on the recording.

I agree that he is reliable. There are those who call him Abbadull but I wouldn't go that far. Besides, his recent works often rise above the level of just being solid. The 2 and the 9 in his Mahler DVD cycle are probably the most intense performances of these symphonies I've heard.
he is so uninspired ... ( 10 months ago by nachtmusik1860)
he is so uninspired that some of the best orchestral musicians of the world (including some world class soloists) give up on their summer holidays to play with and for him. Have a look around the orchestra, mate, see if you recognize someone, or go and hear them LIVE in Lucerne.

Cheers, I'll keep my ears open for those recordings!

Ah, I'd love to go hear them live in Lucerne. I'm just going by my impression formed by what I've heard on the radio over the years. It's not an opinion etched in stone, by any means. And now, after having seen Mazel conduct die Walkure, my definition of "uninspired" has changed. That performance was flat out dull. I've *never* found Abbado dull. Besides, what musicians think of a conductor may not correspond to how an audience, live or via recording, connects to him.
Problem with ... ( 9 months ago by prokarajan)
Problem with interpreting Mahler is that Conductors over sensualize the Mahler score.Bernstein once said Mahler is one of the easiest composers to conduct, because Mahler used to give extensive directions in his score.
Conductors don't get it they do their own thing and people faint with admiration.Listen to Bruno Walters' renditins.People call them soft and dull. Now someone tell me if there is anybody who is more qualified than Walter to conduct Mahler.Abbado's rendtion is faithful to Mahler!!!

It lasts 85 minutes and the Finale (In Tempo das Scherzo) lasts half an hour but its a movement is a musical wonderful specially the last part when appearts the choir and vocal the solists. Thanks for this version I liked me (Claudio Abbao)

7:14 is the most beautiful section in this movement. Whenever I hear it, I get chills that run throughout my body. I recently played the first timpani part and nearly burst out in tears at how beautiful it was. Absolutely amazing.

Ah, nice. I don't have any actually famous people in my bloodline, however, a lot of my family knew Maynard Ferguson and some other famous musicians of back int he day. How old're you? If you don't mind me asking. =p

that's cool that people in ur family knew Maynard Ferguson. i can only tell u that im in high school. i don't feel very comfortable telling people how old i am...im just protective about stuff like that.

I think i saw someone on Facebook who also claimed to be related to Mahler. I imagine that his family was big one, and I am not at all surprised that you are related to him. you are in High school? so, i imagine you can't be more than 18-19 years old. When i was 18 i've already been listening to Mahler for a few years, but yeah, high school is probably the time when Mahler's music is highly relevant.

it's not my facebook. i don't have a facebook...or myspace...or anything. just a youtube account. yeah mahler did have a lot of family members. when i've searched him there was like 20 pages of extended families. and those were just the families that allowed anything to be written about them! I guess my grandfather wanted to keep our family private, cause we're not on the internet when you reaserch mahler's family.

It's amazing the power that youth can bring into a song... I have hear the same movement played by a young Orchestra from Venezuela, and you can feel the diference... Even if this one is great, their interpretation is charged with so much more energy...

I agree, and Abbado has definitely spent a lot of time teaching youth orchestras. Now, is there a particular recording that you have in mind?

well, there is some truth to what you say. At the same time, I must say that it's not a common occurrence that people are "bragging" about how they are related to a Composer of symphonies. I mean, how much of the general population do you think even know who Mahler is?
