Yes this is where Sweelinck was organist, but.....it's not the organ Sweelinck played.
Thi one was built after Sweelinck died for a good time allready.
The city and the church wanted an organ that was a representative instrument of it;s time then, and to show that Amsterdam was still a wealthy city,...so,...they tore the old instrument up and had this one built!

Thank you very much! Even so, the Oudekerk is so lucky to have today Matteo Imbruno as organist. I think Sweelinck is very happy down in his grave listening the superbe interpretation on the new Maestro...

A word about the organ. During the 19th century and again in the 20th century the Muller/Vater organ was greatly altered to suit the taste of that time. More recently there was been more work on the organ. However, the present instrument is very different from its predecessors and in no way is connected to the original. There is a video of Matteo Imrbruno playing Scheidemann "Alleluia, laudem dicite Deo nostro" which is very beautiful.

Please see my remarks above. Matteo Imbruno plays the transept organ which is from just after the time of Sweelinck and is restored to sound like organs of that period.

According to the church's web site the organ was altered by mr Witte in 1869 for the last time.
The alterations were done to make the organ sound louder and more tot the taste of the time

Yes, this is true except that some stops were also changed. (See below about the transept organ.) The church is basically a museum now, isn't that correct?

Thanks! The recording with Mr.Imbruno playing Scheidemann is as a voice from Heaven to me, and the Ahrendt/Brunzema instrument a true wonder. What a mastering and craftmanship, incredible...

In an earlier post you asked if any of the stops of the Oude Kerk's main instrument are from the time of Sweelinck. I believe I once heard that possibly one of them was, or at least some of the pipes of that, but I'm not certain. Apparently between now and 2013 the Oude Kerk hopes to finish the final phase of restoration which, hopefully, will include restoring to main organ. The transept organ on which Imbruno played the Scheidemann has been restored.
