It's named CBU-97/105 also known as sensor fuzed weapon. It's built by Textron and it's the first of its kind. Each of the five cylinders in the front can be seen breaking away, and the other five in the back are soon to follow. Within each of these 10 cylinders are 4 seperate warheads , which makes for 40 individual war heads. The computer onboard each of the 40 then activates a thermal image recognition system which is active for only seconds. Long enough to determine whats an enemy tank or truck and whats ground or trees and the like. This weapon is currently in use and is meant to destroy convoys of enemy troops and supplies.

Might be useful as an anti runway bomb as well.
theorhetically yes, ... ( 2 years ago by shogunassassin)
theorhetically yes, if there were some tweaking with the computer sensor itself. or if, and this is a big if, all the planes had just landed. based on the thermal recognition system it's really only for live vehicles and troop transport. but im sure the possibilities are limitless and im sure we'll see it soon. has anyone heard about the trident missle revamp with multiple conventional warheads.

Yes, i think you can modify it so it canbe used in the sme way as the Durandal bombs. No i haven
´t so they´re about to modify some of their trident missles with conventional warheads?
But if they do so ... ( 2 years ago by nissan92)
But if they do so it will be very expensive for them to launch one Trident instead of using the Tomahawks? Well they will get the option to destroy enemy facilties from the US home water.
yeah, the tomohawk ... ( 2 years ago by shogunassassin)
yeah, the tomohawk would surely be cheaper and easier, but the idea behind trident and atlas revamp is the sheer size of the payload. imagine in a country like iraq, they wouldnt see it comin till it was way too late. then suddenly this one big dot turns into an umbrella of a hundred or so.
imagine ... ( 2 years ago by shogunassassin)
imagine erradicating a whole infrastructure in a matter of minutes. the effect that would have on an enemy. the b2 has been modified to carry 80 i think, maybe 60, i dont really remember. but that still buts the pilots in danger, and all the information a more advanced country could scrap from a b2 or other stealth bomber. but a icbm doesnt have to make the return voyage.

China might have submunitions, hell napoleon had some. But the US is the ONLY ONE with Sensor fuses smart submunitions that causes ZERO damage if it did not explode.

you have some stockoptions in an US factory or you realy believe this ? the probability 0 never exist, and the sensor fuse has dysfunctions too : see reports of NGO
The reason why it ... ( 8 months ago by beliserius)
The reason why it is safe is that it uses plastic explosives. Plastic explosives can only be triggered with a Major electric Jolt. So, unless someone stick a cable at the unexploded submunition, i doubt its going to cause any damage.

Isn't that scary though? If another country got there hands on this shit they could do a fly over and wipe out a group of vehicles. If we can do they can can too. Or will be able to soon.
This looks like ... ( 4 months ago by ElCid4321)
This looks like some kind of Cluster bomb. This is an excellent bomb that can be used to scatter hundreds of small bomblets. The bomblets do not explode but are designed to detonate when people or animals step on them. These bombs keep the terroists out of an area of land since they are difficult to detect. The Israelis used these bombs in Lebanon to keep control the terrors that operate rocket launchers.

We are still cleaning up Cluster Bombs here in Laos 33 years after the last one was dropped. 30 to 50 % do not function. All BLU's are bad news, just ask the four kids blown up two months ago..
This is a "sensor ... ( 3 months ago by mace5k)
This is a "sensor fuzed weapon". The submunitions released scan for selected targets then executes. If no targets can be found in the allotted time frame or altitude lost, which ever is programed, the "smart" bomblets are to self destruct leaving a clean battle field.
Thats right plastic ... ( 1 month ago by probdralle)
Thats right plastic explosives and probably not fused, but controlled by a microchip. its not a bana cluster bomb, it is really like a minni bomber dropping precision guided munition, only the minni plane has been dropped by a big plane first...

"they say" I love your sources. And victims would be civilians or collateral damage. So, you just said 90% of civilians are civilians. Way to go, Sherlock...
