Isaac Stern making an inspiring speech, with footage alternating between his masterclasses and an stirring performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto. A very young, then-undiscovered Wang Jian plays the Eccles in the credits.
This clip has been taken from the end of the 1980 documentary - From Mao To Mozart: Isac Stern in China - which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

wow words of wisdom you don't use the music to play the violin, but, you use the violin to play music. Never thought of that. That's absolutely brilliant Isaac. He must've thought of that while he was on the toilet.

Those are words of wisdom. China went through tough times during the 1970's. It's great that Isaac Stern came to China to help the chinese musicians.

Being Chinese I ... ( 2 months ago by adoumri)
Being Chinese I find this a little condescending. It's like the great white man has come to save us brown/yellow people from cultural inferiority. Not to say that the Chinese didn't greatly appreciate this but it drives home the point once again that Western cultural domination has a long legacy in Asia.

thats not correct. Players like Stern go all over the world bringing the same teaching because, after all, we have the emotions and aspirations and love for music.
being Chinese ... ( 1 month ago by audioliquor)
being Chinese musician (i play both Chinese and "Western" music) i understand that China back then was at a juncture where there was huge loses in cultural teachings - Eastern and Western - due to the events that took place in the preceeding years. Stern praised accordingly that the younger generation was more expressive and the older generation played with lots of inhibition. did you actually watch the whole thing? he was there to teach as well as understand and learn.
