Keeping the ashes were just another tactic to annoy the hell out of the son. Pierce Marshall the second, into an early grave. And it worked. He had a heart attack and died. He sued her over the estate and they went to war in court and he lost.
She never consumated the "marriage" and abandoned him while she was supposed to be with him on their honeymoon to go to Greece for a photo shoot instead.
