BEHIND THE SCENES WITH COREY FELDMAN OF THE 1988 LICENCE TO DRIVE.
License to Drive (1988) Naughty But Saintly Teen-Agers ''License to Drive'' is rated PG-13 (''Special Parental Guidance Suggested for Those Younger Than 13''). It contains a little rude language. 'What Could Possibly Go Wrong?' LICENSE TO DRIVE, directed by Greg Beeman; written by Neil Tolkin; di
rector of photography, Bruce Surtees; film editor, Wendy Greene Bricmont; music by Jay Ferguson; production designer, Lawrence G. Paull; produced by Jeffrey A. Mueller and Andrew Licht; released by the 20th Century-Fox Film Corporation. At the National, Broadway at 44th Street; the Plaza, 42 East 58
th Street, and other theaters. Running time: 90 minutes. This film is rated PG-13. Nickles By CARYN JAMES Anyone old enough to have a license is probably m
uch too old to be amused by ''License to Drive,'' the comic adventure of a 16-year-old who fails his driving test and sneaks off on Saturday night in his grandfather's 1972 Cadillac. By morning he has driven around town with his drunken girlfriend passed out in the trunk and two friends howling in t
he passenger seats. It is proof of the candy heart beneath the film's reckless storyline that all this action seems at worst slightly naughty. Early on, sweet-faced Corey Haim looks straight into the camera and asks: ''An innocent girl. A harmless drive. What could possibly go wrong?'' The scene o
ffers one of the few hints that everyone involved knows exactly how predictable and formulaic the film is. But then, its ideal audience is a group that longs to be as old as its high-school characters, a group that hasn't been around long enough to grow tired of the car chases, romantic near-misses
and ''My dad's gonna kill me!'' moments when fenders crumble and headlights shatter. Though the plot and action never get better than a television movie of the week, the engaging cast brings much more style to the material than it deserves. As Les, who can't bear to pass up a date with a beautiful
girl named Mercedes, Mr. Haim is exactly the good-but-mischievous son you'd expect from Richard Masur's solid Dad and Carol Kane's spacy Mom. Corey Feldman (who was also Mr. Haim's best friend in ''The Lost Boys'') is Dean, the more mischievous friend who goads Les to be his worst. The actors don't
ever wink at the camera, but they realize that they're just this side of ''Leave It to Beaver'' and that it's not an unpleasant place to spend 90 minutes. Throughout Les's long night, we know nothing bad will happen because, after all, this is a harmless summer comedy and because the film comes w
ith built-in disclaimers. Les happens to be a very good driver who had a little trouble on the written part of his test. And Dean even warns his friend about the penalities for driving without a license. These kids never drive drunk; they don't do drugs; in the real world of teen-agers they're pract
ically saints. And Les's understanding parents are straight from fantasyland. All is forgiven on Saturday morning after Les heroically drives his pregnant mom to the hospital. The car will only go in reverse, so Les's father, busy holding his wife's hand, lets his son drive to the hospital backwards
. ''License to Drive,'' which opens today at the National and other theaters, is just as sweet, just as bland, as its unbelievable cartoonish world. ''License to Drive'' is rated PG-13 (''Special Parental Guidance Suggested for Those Younger Than 13''). It contains a little rude language. 'What
