I don't remember anything of this scene in the book. Of course many little stories have been pressed together into a new mixture, leading to the same end, but I don't remember Marilla ever being angry with Anne about Gilbert Blythe. On the contrary, she approved of him, partly because when she was young, she was in love with his father. And always thought that they (Anne and Gilbert) should get married.

I really loved this series - I watched it over and over again, but is it just me, or did they make Gil's and Anne's relationship more modern than it was in the book? I mean in the book, it was just about friendship and it was more innocent, and these scenes reminds me of a modern teenage date and romance. It was probably the only unharmonious note for me in the series, but it was a pretty big unharmonious.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the book and TV series - so obsessed with the movie that my sister bought me Anne of Ingleside with Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie posing as a married couple on the cover - and yes, two of the most romantic scenes in the first book are when he gives her a candy heart, and when he takes a rose that has fallen from her hair during a concert - it's just that it was a very sweet adoration on his part, which comes out very harshly modern in this scene
