Basically, the dance is a duel. Jacquou (the main character) and the Count (the man in black) profoundly hate each other. The Count is a ruthless man. When Jacquou was just a kid, his father resisted the Count. So the Count used his power to have him arrested.

That ultimately resulted in Jacquou's father's death. Jacquou's mother died a short time after that. As he grew up, the idea of getting his revenge and destroying the Count (one way or another) helped Jacquou survive. This is the story behind this dance/duel. Hope that helped you. :)
