him not actually fucking the prostitute is an integral part of the book. in this scene he is trying out a persona "Jim Steel" he fails terribly, and he knows, he acts out the death of Jim Steel with the bullet in the stomache the persona of the catcher is the only one that held up when he saves phoebe, by keeping her on course with her own life and keeping her from running away with him. He has to sacrafice his own personal vandetta against the world to keep Phoebe pure.

I agree. Holden wants to be part of soceiety, but he can't see himself agreeing with it. He sees a vision of truth behind everything, and he also sees how people around him seem to acknowledge that truth but break it which causes him to see the worldas phony. Holden's search for love and the ruth sets him out into the world alone from the begining until he can come to terms with it. In the end he does, but he leaves it for himself to decide how to handle it, and not some shrink

i'm not even twelve yet and i've read "the catcher in the rye" it is now my favorite book. this scene with sunny the prostitute is the only "bad"(explicit) scene in the book and i think that this book isn't that contiversial at all besides all the swearing and stuff but who cares. i think that people shold stop being pussies and that this book should be required reading in every school.(but not every grade; 7th sounds good.)

The Catcher in the Rye was not meant to be read by kids in 7th grade, no offense. In order to understand the true meanings behind the book and really understand Holden, you have to have a level of maturity that middle-schoolers just don't have yet. Its cool that you can understand the words, but read it again in a few years and you'll have a much better understanding of the book.

i agree catcher in the rye is meant for teens and older, you can't get the idea of grieve over loss innocence before you actually lose your innocence, sure kids are smart they are underestimated but intellectual cleverness shouldn't be confused with emotional maturity
