Don't forget, Edward is the true original engine. When the Rev. W. Awdry's son Christopher got the measles, he made up Edward, then added Gordon and Henry. Thomas only came into being because Christopher wanted a toy of Gordon, but Gordon was too difficult to make so he made a small tank engine, painted it blue, and let Christopher name it. He named it Thomas.

What always got me was how similar James and Edward were in shape. I mean, all the engines had a similar counterpart: Thomas and Percy, Gordon and Henry, Duck and Oliver, but they were all shaped and configured differently from their counterpart. Edward and James almost looked like twins- even though there was a lot of difference in age and attitudes between the engines.

They are all based off real engines that are similar to each other. They also have different personalities compared to their counterpart. Gordon-mean to Henry-kind hearted, James-rude to Edward-cheerful, etc.
