This is my first film project. If you know nothing of the Curse of William Penn, here is a summary.
The William Penn Statue was first perched atop City Hall building at Broad and Market Street in Center City Philadelphia over a century ago. In 1984, plans to build Philadelphia's first skyscraper - One Liberty Place - had commenced. The 945 foot glass skyscraper, to be located only three blocks
west of City Hall, would exceed Penn's hat by a whopping 397 feet. Philadelphia sports teams had, up until that point, enjoyed a wealth of success - back to back Stanley Cups for the Flyers in 1974 and 1975, an NBA title for the Sixers in 1983, and the appearance of all four major sports teams in
their respective finals in 1980, concluding in a World Series Title for the Phillies. The Golden Age of Sports in the City of Brotherly Love was brought to a halt in 1985, only a few months after discussions to build Liberty One had commenced, when Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers hoisted the S
tanley Cup following a win over the Flyers in game five. Since then, the Eagles, Sixers, Phillies and Flyers, have gone 0 for 7 in Championship finals, accumulating in an 88-season drought - the longest of any city with four professional sports teams. Meanwhile, the City of Brotherly Love now sport
s seven skyscrapers that rise above the ever mysterious statue of William Penn. Interestingly enough, all of the offending buildings stand to the west of City Hall as the city's founder faces northeast, conceivably giving Penn an unobstructed view of the Delaware River (where he and the Quaker settl
ers originally landed in the late 1600s). Whether the buildings were constructed keeping Penn's view in mind or not, the fact still remains that Philadelphia pro sports fans have been deprived of a championship for 22 years...and counting. www.phrustratedphan.com

Maybe for the same ... ( 5 months ago by 62kirk)
Maybe for the same reason Nike used it in their commercial with Shawne Merriman And Steven Jackson. Or maybe since it has nothing to do with Boston because it was written in 1992 for the movie The Last of the Mohicans.

maybe the song was remade for Last of the Mohicans. Maybe it was actually written by South Boston local and Cork County Ireland native Trevor Hogan in 1848.
The Rolling Stones ... ( 5 months ago by 62kirk)
The Rolling Stones originated in London, England yet their song "Gimme Shelter" opens the movie the Departed, a movie which I'm sure you know is set in Boston. Your argument does not hold much weight. Music is Universal my friend.

I'm Not a beat my chest philly sports fan and as of late there really is no reason to be, but a philly sports fan non the less, this video brought on a tear or two. what really set me off was the statement "theres always next year" I hate that acceptance of mediocrity jargon. I was so young the last time we won a championship I don't even remember. so to me, it's like we never ever won any at all, for this I am sad. please philly sports franchises a championship before I die I beg you.

Don't mind what FriendlyWalrus says, the song is beautiful.I also like the opening 20 seconds where there is an aerial view of the city (I'm orginally from Philly).Great Job!!!(^_^)
Sjekim the reason ... ( 5 months ago by juan8361)
Sjekim the reason why we go through this misery season after season is because we are REAL Philly sports fans. This is who we are and believe me when our teams reach the "promised land" it'll be very memorable and tears will be shed, tears of joy (^_^) Keep the dream alive (^_~)
Yeah but the main ... ( 5 months ago by FriendlyWalrus)
Yeah but the main song for the departed was a dropkick murphys song, a band from Boston. So your point isn't valid.
It's a little ... ( 5 months ago by 62kirk)
It's a little ridiculous to say that since a man wrote this song over 150 years ago in Boston, and has since been reworked and rearranged, and used as the focal point in many other pieces, I can't use this song. Music is not and should never be limited to one specific thing. But I guess you're right;)

Curses do exist... ... ( 4 months ago by awsnonymous)
Curses do exist... 1993 Phillies, 1997 Flyers, 2001 Sixers, 2004 Eagles... all made it to the final stage, only to fall short. 1983 our last Championship... here it is 2008, 25 years. The Silver Anniversary of no wins... and four teams. That means well over 100 seasons of falling short. But the foundations of "The Curse" are weakening, and soon will collapse. One Day. We will win. One Day.

This video is great ... ( 4 months ago by FIaps)
This video is great, but what really caught my attention was the explanation of 'Penn's Curse' in your summary box. I've heard of the curse before, but never really asked anyone the true meaning. Thank you for posting this. Also - a fact I heard on WMMR the other day - The '75 Flyers were the last team in the NHL to win the Stanley Cup where EVERY player on the team was Canadian. Pretty cool fact, I thought.
I would never ... ( 3 months ago by sarielx)
I would never switch to being a Yankee, Habs, or Patriot fan! Every team gets there due eventually, did I mention I was a Red Sox fan? I can't stand Philly, but that's because you don't go out quietly! One day, "next year" will be "this year". So don't blame it on Penn.
Curses may be ... ( 3 months ago by Scjrd91)
Curses may be depressing and frustrating but they make sports fans that much more passionate. It will happen one year. It will probably be a team that isn't dominant, a team that just comes out of the blue and blitzes through the playoffs like a buzzsaw. I think this curse also gets into players heads once they get deep into the playoffs. Its all you hear on the news when we get close; "Philadelphia hasn't won a championship in 25 years."
the Phantoms have ... ( 3 months ago by meandtheDoctor)
the Phantoms have won two Calder Cups since 97' We won in 2005 during the NHL lock out which technically made us the best hockey team in North America that year. don't give up hope, we will over ride the curse. there is a billy penn statue at the top of the comcast tower now so victory shall be ours :)
god i hope so... ... ( 3 months ago by adrock1011)
god i hope so... but let's look at our prospects... if the phillies don't do it in the next year or two... we may have another 8-year rebuilding cycle... eagles? they are good, but you never know... last year everyone picked the birds to win the east, and the giants won the sb... flyers seem to be the kings of falling a hair short of being elite... and the 6ers enjoy moderate success once every few years... i hope it happens soon too... i hope once the dam bursts philly enjoys years of success

no it is the curse of lousy management in all sports letting guys like Charles Barkley, Allen Iverson, Curt Schilling rest his soul Reggie white leave in there primes
Its simple, ... ( 2 months ago by jerome42881)
Its simple, management will never make the extra step to be the best. The only time a Philly team corrected weaknesses was the 2004 Eagles when they signed Kearse and traded for TO and still fell short. Ownership never takes a chance to become great. When the celebration parade occurs, I bet at least 5 million will make the parade and in the words of beloved Tug McGraw, we'll shove it their asses.
I grew up in Philly ... ( 1 month ago by zorak1997)
I grew up in Philly and was only four in 1980 - the year all four teams made the finals. Being so young I honestly thought Philly teams had a bye to the finals each year and we played for the title against the best comer. That idea didn't last!
I've lived in downtown Boston since the '90s and have seen six parades. They're special and I hope Philly gets some soon. Another sad Philly sports fact: The team with the most titles? The Philadelphia Athletics - and they left town in the 1950s.
