although sarah vaughn got minimal recognition for her contribution to jazz, the truth is that her voice is probably pleasing everybody in Heaven right now. her sassy phrasing and her warm and gracious personality that never met a stranger are in this video for all to see and mammothly enjoy. dr. gatsby melodi' phd, nyc.

Oh my god, i still get goosebumps and chills listening to this Goddess do her thing!
I 1st became hip to her when i was about 16, about 1960. It was late morning i was still in the bed (unusual for me) when i heard this voice from our raggedy-ass tv. I have never heard anything like her, save Nat or Johnny M. and her sound was so dreamy that my toes literally 'curled' and......i'm sorry Ella, etal Sarah does it for me!
Isn't she "Divine"
What I love most ...( 1 month ago by linguistmuz)
What I love most about her voice is her magnificent vibrato. It's so smooth and still very "grounded" and powerful. It's also remarkable how stable it is, because you can see she really shakes her larynx up and down doing it (eg, 3:50), and vibrato produced in such a way tends to be irregular (and is considered "wrong" in, for instance, classical singing).
I especially like how she sings vibrato on final consonants such as "n" (ownnnnn).
But why am I analyzing one of the greatest jazz singers?
