1976, up and coming filmmaker Martin Scorsese decides to make one of the most compelling human portraits in cinema history.
Bernard Herrmann supplied Scorsese's masterpiece with a fitting soundtrack. His saxophone creates a dreamy sort of atmoshpere which perfectly fits Travis Bickle's troubled, but (still) passive character. Few soundtracks can fill it's listener with such vivid memories of the visuals. Amazing.

to think that Travis is either just good or just bad, is proving that you have an archaic view on storytelling/filmmaking (no offence). Travis is good nor bad, he is Travis Bickle. He does what he does.

You may consider it to be an archaic way of viewing a film. However, having a simplistic attitude towards watching a film cannot be very rewarding. Good film makers want the audience to think about what they see. Hence my question to the you tube community. regards.

I don't think Travis was supposed to be a hero or villian. Are the vast majority of people really one or the other? I think there's varying amounts of good and bad in everyone and that's what Scorsese was going for. Travis did some nice things in the film and I think he was generally a good-hearted man, but his loneliness and disgust towards society made him delusional, negative, and driven him to kill.

It brings an illusion where dreams mix with reality...and reminds me of those nights when I awoke and found myself lying alone on the bed...Time stopped elapsing and flashed back and forward into both the past and the future...It was all mixed up...all together...just the dreamily melody went on for the rest of the night...

This is the most intelligent collection of comments I have seen on any youtube clip. Well done everyone! The film is a masterpiece. One of those films where everything comes together: acting (brilliant acting by de Niro), directing, cinematography, music (Herman at his best, and sadly, last).

I love this poster. I saw this film 30 years ago in central london. I can still remember the atmosphere in the cinema. It was electric. At the end .. we knew we had seen something special.

...Probably one of the best movie posters... one of the most thrilling movie themes. I'd say Herrmann's dreamy themes contributed to 'Taxi Driver' as much as De Niro did, the music here is another leading 'character'... 'Taxi Driver' takes a very special place on my list of 'favorites'.

Good question, it made me think. But i'd probably say he was a bad guy cause lets face it, he was a stalker, a potential assasin, and a murderer, even if he did save a teenage prostitute. But there again most people are a mixture of good and bad...so maybe he was both good 'and' bad.

Such a fantastic score for such a compelling movie. With so many returning from the war in Iraq I expect this film has deep meaning for thousands of young men out there(women too I suppose).
