Wow! Great, George ... ( 5 months ago by jfreijser)
Wow! Great, George Russell trying to explain tonal gravity, vertical and horizontal concepts of improvisation, and the Lydian scale. So many talents went through George Russell's 'school'. Grumpy presenter, indeed, but he set very high standards for his program. Most laudable, and almost unthinkable in our times.

What a pleasure! As a guitarist, to get to see Mundell Lowe and Barry Galbraith is worth the price of admission, which is free...and to hear from George Russell, even better. Try to put a show like this on TV today (this show was on NBC) and of course no one would watch it because it would take too much intelligence. Present company excepted of course. Thanks so much for posting this.

They hit the development of Jazz right on the head! Perfectly prescient explanation of a greater tonal and organisational freedom and experimentation of form. :)

thanks so much for this tape! what a pleasant surpise to hear George Russell speak! exciting musical presentation. not only good musicians but they all fit together so well. my apologies to doc. severinsen who i tended to dismiss as a talk show band/jokester. the guy could play! and bill evans' playing on Billy The Kid removes all doubt about lennie tristano's early influence. i wish i had heard more jimmy cleveland as a soloist rather than as just a section player.

14:29-14:38 He speaks the truth and his predictions are accurate like crazy. He knew that by example of how adventurous bop was in those days, jazz was going to turn in to something totally more daring and curious. As today is.
