Actually, ... ( 4 months ago by thisdarcy)
Actually, Shakespeare didn't write and arrange this play as we know it. He wrote and arranged this play into many different versions, called folios, which each contained different combinations of some but not all of the scenes in the present day version. At some point well after his death the folios were collected and combined, the thinking generally being that more Shakespeare = more better. But is it still Shakespeare at this point? By your thinking: no.

They really fucked up with the kissing of the mom...but mom marrying Claudius happens in the play.

dude you have to understand that back in the old days it was normal for family's to marry family not saying its a good thing but they sometimes did it because marrying someone who was not royal would strip them of their royalty. so the solution marry a cousin or mom and keep your throne
Brother in law is ... ( 4 months ago by Flowbee79)
Brother in law is not techinically a blood relative, although back then it was seens just as strong. And the kiss, well intense, is part of the whole Oedipal themes of the play. No Hamlet can escape those themes if they want to do Shakespeare justice.
I think it works ... ( 4 months ago by Flowbee79)
I think it works good in this order, as in the Zefferilli Hamlet. By the time Hamlet contemplates suicide, which is what the speech is pondering, so much depressing, jarring things have happened to his life. Father's dead, killed by his jerk Uncle, who is now married and sleeping with his mother. He has a mission to avenge the murder, feign his own madness, turn people against him, including his girlfriend, who is being used by hypocrites to entrap him. Kind of depressing chain of events.

personally, this doesn't entice me - gibson's hamlet is quite clearly raving mad, dare i say TOO mad? give me a larry olivier, a kenny branagh any day. zeffirelli's done much, much better with romeo & juliet, IMHO.
as for gertrude & claudius getting married, that's indeed in the play, in fact it's a big half of why hamlet is so upset. also in the play are sexual tensions between him & gertrude, but there's no need to bring freud into it. was he alive in the 17th century? no.

This is a bit of a let down to be honest. I was really hoping Gibson would play Hamlet as sincerely as he did in other roles. As it is, he hasn't produced anything original, in fact he has gone out of his way to sound 'establishment'. Not very good. Still, delivered with a lot more expression than Brannaghs sterile jolt. If his love life is that bland I pitty the man!

I think he kisses his mom in this one because, it symbolise the love for his mother and the want of affection.

Hamlet treats Ophelia poorly in this scene. but it's pretty cool to see that actor praying after, at least i think he's praying there

the awesome thing is when Ophelia gives back the Brown Scapular for him to wear. (hopefully she has an extra one for herself, since she like dies later)

Frankly, Mel Gibson is ridiculous for those that watched the version with Laurence Olivier.

i dont kno y i didnt lik dis version of hamlet, tho the acting of getrude, ophelia, and polonius i like a lot. the thing is tho, i reely admire how realistic mel was as hamlet without all the corney broadway aspects and everything. dis is how a mad persn should act rite? my mind just wont allow me to fully accept this movie version. dont kno y? maybe i need to watch other enactments insted of jus watching it live.

I wouldn't say he was ridiculous, that's just unfair but Olivier is and will always be the best Hamlet.
