At there last encounter he mentions that he chose the life of a hero but he regrets not being able to pass his sword skill on while he was living. Some people think this means he was the previous hero of time from Oot

well many of the howls are songs from OOT, and the gold wolf will always appear and tells you to "meet him with sword in hand"(as a human) at a location on the map, then he becomes a skeletal warrior in aceint armor to teach you skills, the wolf thing at first is when link enters the realm of twilight, later though he actualy gains the ability to freely go between his human and wolf form
