Taken from the top deck of the ferry from Port Townsend to Whidbey Island.
The wind came up, pushing some waves over the top of the ferry. I was standing on the top deck when I shot this - notice how the water was over my head, and flooded the deck. The top deck is 40 to 50 feet above water level!

You are incorrect. The top deck is more than 30 feet above water.
Update: they recently took that ferry out of service due to a crack in the steel hull, caused by rough seas on this route.

How can the deck be 30 feet above the water if the freeboard is 3 feet and the auto deck clearance is 13 feet? it should be no higher than 18 feet.

You are incorrect. The height of that deck is only about twenty feet, and that's allowing for six feet of freeboard. Though I admit I've only worked on it once or twice.

No, he said Port Townsend, not Whidbey Island - they are distinctly different different as one is an island and one is on the Olympic Peninsula (if you have "lived here" you'd know). Sure there's weird people everywhere, thank gawd. Not quite The Wicker Man (but if you think so and it keeps you away from here, right on).
