These little cars are damn good fun actually, they have very nimble handling and one gave my Volvo 850 T5 a run for its money! I've heard they aren't particularly reliable but for £5000 you could do a lot worse. You'd definitely be better with a Honda Civic Type R which start from around £5000 for an early one.
Or if you really want a hot hatch to blow your socks off and be different at the same time then £5000 will get you the finest hot hatch ever made, a Lancia Delta I ntegrale

The Delta is properly old school that's another reason why I like it so much! Not a bad idea with the S3 though, Infact i have 2 mates with S3's and they love them.
Saying that, £5000 will buy you a very nice 3.0ltr BMW E36 M3 or £6000 for an early 3.2 M3Evoultion. These are the best pefromance cars for that sort of money, but if you're under 25 insurance will be ridiculously expensive. Pros and cons really
