That's nonsense. Millan's methods are counterproductive because they fail to take into account the true nature of dogs and how they learn. It has nothing to do with human feelings but human cognition and the lack thereof.

Dude, you're not listening at all. Get off of Milan for a second. Have you ever seen fat ass dogs and cats? They get like that b/c their owners think food is a pleasure for animals - it's not. animals eat to survive. Humans eat to live and also live to eat. Dogs understand things differently from us. A person walking straight at them means a challenge in their world but in human world it could mean this person is late for work, powerwalking, or scared. You obviously don't understand dogs at all.

I've worked in animal shelters, know reasons they are there, studied animal behavior, have 3 dogs, and know people who feed their dogs too much because they believe the dogs like it. He uses violence & he ruins dogs. Military dogs come from long lines of working dogs that have proven their ability to resist & comeback from stress. If Millan tried his shit on my dogs, they would rightly kill him. He gets away w/ beating dogs b/c most dogs are soft & they don't bite, at most you get a nip. There is also the fact that they need to condition the dogs to stress b/c that is what they will face in their working situations. It is about life & death for the handler.

I don't think his methods are that severe, save for the 'rolling' technique he uses (although he has a caveat about its use by professionals only). His main points are always "exercise, discipline and affection". He isn't cruel to his dogs, they clearly do love him and he does praise them. He does discipline them, yes, but I wouldn't describe it as kicking/punching. He does advocate that there are more methods than his own, and to use what a dog responds effectively to.

I doubt you could find someone that disagrees that dogs need exercise, discipline or affection. However Millan's version of discipline is hitting the dog if it shows unwanted behavior. A more progressive view is to teach the dog self discipline - the word comes from "instruction given to a disciple". What millan really means is exercise, punishment and affection. There's correcting and then there's hitting with the intent to cause pain, I don't think he's doing the latter. It's tough to enter into complex discussions of power and self-discipline when it's applied to dogs who don't rationalize behavior. Not to say Clothier's methods aren't as good or better, I just don't think Millan is abusive.
