Yes...it was the Russian launch of a satellite for the European Space Agency. The ESA'ers you see in the film were told to remain farther back from the launch site but they were (overly) confident the launch would go well so they moved in for a closer look.

I'm torn between absolute shock and horror at some of the terrible things happening there, and the feeling that some of those dimwits really had it coming to them. My 'favourite' is the one where the guys are all whooping and cheering at things 'sploding, only to learn that things 'sploding isn't quite as much fun WHEN THEY'RE EXPLODING IN YOUR GENERAL PROXIMITY...
