The FLIP (FLoating Instrument Platform) is a research vessel that can rotate to a vertical position. It is currently owned by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. http://sio.ucsd.edu/voyager/flip/index.html

yep, FLIP is mainly used for wave studies and general physical oceanography. basically any type of research where you want a stable platform that's not bouncing around in heavy seas.
