A Sumatran rhinoceros is captured on a remote video camera set up in the jungles of Malaysian Borneo.
One of the world's rarest species, the Borneo rhino, has been caught on video for the first time in a project that could help save it from extinction, it was announced today. Conservationists fear there could be as few as 25 rhinos of this shy species left in the jungles of Borneo. They are conce
rned that the remaining animals are so isolated that they do not meet each other enough to breed. Article continues The elusive nature of the species was immortalised by Redmond O'Hanlon in his bestselling book Into the Heart of Borneo, based on his account of trying to track down a rhino on the is
land. They are so secretive that the first still photograph of a Borneo rhino was taken last year. Now, thanks to a new video camera trap developed by the WWF, moving pictures of a Borneo rhino have been recorded. The film shows a rhino emerging from the undergrowth to noisily sniff the camera equ
ipment. Raymond Alfred, project manager for the WWF Asian Rhino and Elephant Action Strategy, said filming the species would help to conserve it by giving experts a greater understanding of its behaviour and physical health. "The footage will be used to determine the condition of the rhinos in the
wild," he said. "But we have to realise that these rhinos could face extinction in the next 10 years if their habitat continues to be disturbed and enforcement is not in place." One of the biggest threats to the species is poaching. Its horn is said to be worth as much as gold on the black market.
It is also threatened by the destruction of its forest habitat for agriculture and development. The Borneo rhino is a subspecies of the Sumatran rhino, which is also extremely rare. The WWF estimates there are fewer that 300 Sumatran rhinos worldwide.

shouldn't be interfering, animals extinct for a reason.
It is our ... ( 3 months ago by blkgryphon)
It is our interference that is endangering them in the first place! What are you, mental? We destroy habitat, poison the water, earth and air, change the very climate of the planet, and nature cannot cope with our mess. THAT'S interference. Humans will be extinct for a REASON -- our stupidity and selfishness -- and probably sooner, rather than later. Unfortunately, we're taking everything else with us.
This man is correct ... ( 3 months ago by 00700790210)
This man is correct look what happened a few million years ago when people were leaving their fridge doors open and riding round in cars all day(unknown to them as they didn't know about global warming) started the ice age. Of course we can go back to when records began and say this is the hottest day ever however you will realise the earth is older than "when records began" who's to say there wasn't an even hotter day? That's right that's right the worlds leaders and "scientists"....silly me.
Though your rather ... ( 3 months ago by blkgryphon)
Though your rather incoherent rambling makes it hard to understand your point, I think you are trying to put down science and say that we don't know that the earth wasn't hotter in the past. Well, actually, we do know, and we know through science, which can tell us not only the temperatures of the past, but what was growing then, the amount of rainfall, the atmospheric conditions, etc.
Yes everything ... ( 3 months ago by 00700790210)
Yes everything printed in black and white is the truth of course how silly of me to actually think outside the box. I would love to see you 100% solid proof that we know exactly how much rainfall fell millions of years ago, that's right you can't you have to take someones word for it. Don't you understand that carbon dioxide makes plants grow which keeps us alive of course we could cut carbon emissions to zero and we'll all suffocate. Go back to your so-called facts and cheer on Al Gore.
Uh, are you not ... ( 3 months ago by blkgryphon)
Uh, are you not aware that natural processes create a BALANCED atmosphere with a mix of gasses healthy for plants AND animals? By your logic, no life would have been possible on this planet before we started cranking carbon into the air. I will no longer engage in a conversation with such a twit, as it is a waste of time. Go ahead and spew whatever idiocy you desire. Maybe take some English lessons while you are at it.
No. By my logic ... ( 3 months ago by 00700790210)
No. By my logic more carbon in the air would make plants grow more thus giving us more oxygen. You can go back to believing that the papers are true and everything on the news you hear is fact. So in your perfect world you want us to go back to living n the middle ages? It obviously doesn't bother you that much when you're sitting on your computer 24/7 aren't you thinking of the polar bears? Get a grip and fuck off.
you both have a ... ( 3 months ago by 1bentom1)
you both have a point, you can not be 100% sure what happened one million years ago without actually being there. And there are MANY ways of producing carbon dioxide. All life on earth is essentially carbon based. A mere volcano can produce plenty of carbon dioxide. How do you think life started? Regardless, if humans weren't here, plenty of species would go extinct, we just happen to be the dominate species on the planet. And for the record, carbon dioxide dose not make plants grow.
And i did not mean ... ( 3 months ago by 1bentom1)
And i did not mean that us not being here would be the cause of some species becoming extinct, i meant that other species of animals would be the undoing of others. OOhh and about the video.. that rhino would make a good beat boxer.
If you think about ... ( 3 months ago by 16bullet)
If you think about it one of the biggest problem we humans have is sex,I mean we are over populating the earth our population is growing too fast so we have to cut down tree's for more shelter.
Global warming ... ( 2 months ago by jvh4513)
Global warming caused by man or not, doesn't matter. Extinction due to loss of Habitat can't be argued against, it is factual. hundreds if not thousends of animals don't join the extinct list because of global warming but rather loss of habitat. We cause this, we chop down the trees, torch the land. Anyone who says we don't cause extinction should become extinct themselves. And as 1bentom1 says, CO2 doesn't make plants grow....Ignorance is shown in the responded to comment.
