He isn't unstable. He is just fighting a huge up hill battle, and everyone ridicules him. You have to put yourself in his shoes. But listen to his stance on things like Liberty, and Freedom, and then listen to what everyone else says; though they say it calmly, many of them are down right crazy.
As well, he is old, and sometimes old people can be impatient and senile. So, yes I agree he needs to calm down, but as for him being unstable, I think that is just a bad judgement call.
