In SOuth Asia, especially after 71, USA aligned w/ Pakistan & the SOviets w/ India. The US could assert itself enough w/ Pakistan to grant even spec force manpower (this movie depicts but in real, the enemies shown in this movie were Black Stork Pak Special FOrces esp after "Battlescene 4" onwards.

The USSR couldn't get the same done from its regional ally, who had a pretty large Army base & familiarity w./ COIN warfare (since 65). But the Soviets couldn't get their ally to help but only freeride. Too bad 4 them.

And to sort of wrap it all up, initially, Pakistan supported US in Afghanistan in USSR war, but only intended for logistical & material support, but US could get them to commit ground troops and also special forces as well. TO bloster organization of partisan forces.
USSR's ally in S. Asia- India- gave a much more lukewarm support- to moral & verbal to Soviet Union. A Soviet victory was in India's interests (Kashmir etc), but still didn't help. And USSR had 115,000 compared to 200,000 guerilla

There were no Talibans but were called the Mujahideen. And yes, Bin Laden & Mullah Omar were around.
There was an indegenous Afghan resistance force led by Ahamed Shah Masod, but the rest were CIA funded ISI trained imports from Pakistan, Saudi, Yemen- mostly Pakistan.
Those "Peasents"....yeah, goat herders in Afghanistan, but professional soldiers just a few miles Eastward after crossing border.
