"We" do destroy ... ( 10 months ago by IntelligentHoodlum)
"We" do destroy ourselves and not a "few idiots"; Sagan always talked about the possibility of a nuclear war because the few idiots are allowed to play games with the world, while "We" stand by.

not in america either dude. katrina victims? detroit? washington, dc? visit an american ghetto sometime, or a white-trash trailer park.

You have it the wrong way round. I never said, "few idiots". Neither did Sagan. Smart ppl. are vastly, vastly out numbered by average and below average bears. "It is unfortunate that the people who know best how to run the country are too busy cutting hair and driving cabs." - George Burns
My mistake, "dumb" ... ( 9 months ago by IntelligentHoodlum)
My mistake, "dumb" people. And privileged people usually take advantage of opportunities when presented w/them--so I dont disagree that there are few "smart" people. "I am somehow less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops." -Stephen Jay Gould

(to your original reply to defdeezy's human rights post): To say that most humans don't have problems with slavery or aren't interested in human rights is ludicrous. The slavery abolitionist movement--people just kind of did that for fun? Same with the civil rights movement or the womens suffrage movement--those were just lackadaisical occurrences?
History shows that ... ( 9 months ago by prayfertrey)
History shows that those movements are mostly confined to the middle/upper middle class. Why isn't it typical for ppl. to think about it? Why isn't there a common objection to wage slavery? Why is 90% of tv programming painfully insipid and fatuous and lowest common denominator? Why do politicians manipulate as oppose to communicate? You need to ask the whole world why they think most folks are just wondering through life waiting for next wks episode of their fav tv program.

I'm sure we haven't "arrived"; which is beside my point, dude.

Ok, lets say that ... ( 9 months ago by EthanJM)
Ok, lets say that the average person was as smart as carl sagan. That would mean that there would be a few out there vastly outnumbered by the average folk as smart as carl sagan. The fact is, people are very smart, that is all I am trying to say.
Then why is 90% of ... ( 9 months ago by prayfertrey)
Then why is 90% of commercial tv programming painfully insipid? Why do tv commercials and advertisements talk to people like they're emotional robots and childish idiots? Why do politicians manipulate emotionally, instead of communicate to the intellect? And why does the average bear stand for it? And why is the most popular use of YT looking at videos of Paris Hilton?

OMG..WOW!!! <<<----Not @ the possibile existence of extraterrestrial life, that's pretty obvious, but @ the unnaturally borderline self-mutilation inducing monotone voice of the narrator. OUT OF THIS WORLD!

Though SETI and SETI@home in a planet grid level is a very ambitious notion, its a very primitive technology that we have been using for the last 100 years out of the millions years of the excistance of possible planets out there.

Just think of some of the junk these other planets, light years away, will have been receiving from us. Pop Idol, Big Brother, Iraq War coverage....my god! No wonder they don't bother getting in touch.

OMG. WOW!!! <<<---- @ the jackass. The man was WAY smarter than you, and my personal hero... So stfu...k pumpkin? Jealousy? Is that why people make fun of other people...? I don't get it, but whatever... Anyway... he may not have had the "nicest" voice... but what does that have to do with anything anyway? It's not the delivery system that matters... it's the message.

1 is not a prime ... ( 3 months ago by k3lp00)
1 is not a prime number as far as I know. But other than that I am a fan of Carl Sagan. Had similar ideas to me although I do not think that there are millions of civilizations in our galaxy...maybe 5-10 in my opinion.
I'm not sure why ... ( 2 months ago by plevyman)
I'm not sure why you got voted down for correctly pointing out that 1 isn't a prime number. I really like Carl Sagan, but I think even here he understates the problems of the size of the cosmos and another question (which no-one ever thinks about) which is the amount of time a civilization would have to stick around for us to meet them. Human civilization has only existed for about 10,000 years, that's 1/500,000-th the age of the earth. Even if aliens existed, do they exist *now*?
I do not know ... ( 2 months ago by k3lp00)
I do not know either why they voted me down...a bunch of ignorants they are :D well I think that the lifespam of a civilization depends on several issues. The industrial revolution which we are in recently. So far as a civilization manages to expand to other planets it gains great survavibility. Because from that point on there is a little possibility for a disaster to happen on all of the colonized worlds at the same time.
I do. But what ... ( 1 week ago by k3lp00)
I do. But what exactly is your point?
