Episode 15 of In Search of Giants: Dr Brian Cox takes us on a journey through the history of particle physics. In this episode, Brian and other scientists tell us what they hope the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will reveal about the way the universe works.
This film is part of a series originally shown on Teachers' TV (http://www.teachers.tv/video/23645). The series was made with the support of The Science and Technology Facilities Council (www.scitech.ac.uk). www.lhc.ac.uk - Official UK LHC website for public and schools. www.particledetectiv

WoW, I wish I could be here to see what physics reveals about the Universe a 100 yrs from now. I can only imagine some of the amazing discoveries
Humanity as a ... ( 3 months ago by IrreducibleParadox)
Humanity as a species is not in a rush for these high power experiments. They seem volatile and should be saved until they could be performed safely on a space station somewhere.
these experiments ... ( 3 months ago by beeteebam)
these experiments are safe in terms that these events have been happening for billions of years at even higher speeds and energy levels, i.e. neutrinos hit particles in the earths atmosphere everysingle day, were just doing them under the eyes of our detectors so we can benefit from them. p.s sinkid3 your an idiot.
No experiment is ... ( 3 months ago by IrreducibleParadox)
No experiment is ever safe, if it were it wouldn't be an experiment.
At the very least they could wait with these kinds of experiments until Mars is colonized some 200+ years from now. My reasoning is this, why doesn't seti find anything, not the slightest hint of intelligent life in the galaxy? Because it is insanely rare. There can be only two reasons: Life s
pawns very rarely, or, life tends to annihilate itself leaving little trace. We should be cautious of the second.
i can put baking ... ( 3 months ago by beeteebam)
i can put baking soda in a cup of vinegar and there is always the chance that the result will land in my eyes causing me to go blind the precautions that the scientist at cern take are ones that reduce the probability significantly to consider it "safe" i agree life spawns very rarely cause the planets orbit has to be in the right place and even then it is still one to a billion chance but we kno that it happens because we are here discussing it.
as for number two ... ( 3 months ago by beeteebam)
as for number two this may in fact be our way of being cautious in terms of if anything were to happen to endanger our existence we have the technology to move out and colonize mars or whatever . .. theres no predicting when the next egotistical political leader will want to show his power with a bomb . . or when an asteroid will come to close for comfort.
We could already ... ( 3 months ago by IrreducibleParadox)
We could already coloniza Mars. We don't need a new type of energy to do that. This is an effort to advance technology, but it is an effort without contingency. If it goes wrong we're fucked, period.

How all this explains life? how particules can produce life? what is going on in the particules that form the sparmatozide and the egg in the moment of fertilization?

This is why i relate to science and not religion.
Science just keeps on searching. If proved wrong and a new particle is found, proving their theory wrong, science searches for a new theory.
Religion and it`s bible is a one way street of blind faith in which one is called a sinner if this blind faith is questioned.
How pathetic.

I agree. Humans are at their best when they are striving forwards into the unknown. Religion commands us to be content with given explanations. We need to leap forwards into the future.

The fact that you ... ( 1 month ago by dystopialand)
The fact that you refer to religion and its 'bible' shows just how little you know of actual world religion. Instead, you have a simple Western/Christian viewpoint of it. Do yourself a favor and actually learn of religion. That's what scientists do, isn't it? Learn?

I`ve been studying world religions and other cults for years.
This is why i relate to science and not religion.
Religions=fantasy vs science=facts, facts and more facts.
Have you? The fact ... ( 1 month ago by dystopialand)
Have you? The fact that you openly disregard and disrespect something thats is tightly interwoven with science itself shows your lack of intelligent maturity and contempt for not only religion, but human history itself. Referring to religion as 'the bible' shows your relation of religion to Christianity mindframe. Don't try and hide it when the proof is in the pudding of what you wrote.
Open your mind. That doesn't mean you need to be religious, but respect it for what it is. I am agnostic.

dystopialand;
I definitely respect religion and it`s bible for what it is.
This fantasy(delusion) is the control factor used by the church to control it`s flock to ensure it`s own survival.

Well, see, that I agree with. Organized religion is seperate from 'religion,' itself, though. There are tons of religions across the world that do not have the controlling politics of the Catholic church, though. Many, many people disagree with organized religion, myself included, and I feel that if someone is truly, deeply religious, they should find their 'god' by looking within themselves, not too a priest telling them what to do. As it is with man, we change the true meaning of things.
I agree that people ... ( 1 month ago by maurieer)
I agree that people should "look within themselves" to try and understand their life force.
I can`t accept the present personal god with it`s baggage of heaven for believers, a fiery hell for non-believers, satan to tempt us, original sin to remind us that we were born with sin passed down from Adam and Eve, the second coming to remind us that this loving god will again kill off all life and finally judge all as to whether this loving god will send us either to heaven or a fiery hell.

This whole personal god thing smells of the essence of ignorant, arrogant, delusional man.
All this to enable believers to cope with death and an eternity of a life of bliss worshipping their personal god fantasy.
The problem is that ... ( 1 month ago by Stevehtegreatgr)
The problem is that you don't know what you're talking about. The experiments of world powers were a lot more dangerous than any physicist has ever tried. I remind you of the Tsar Bomba which permanently damaged the ecosystem of the place in which it was tested. There's a vast disproportion of the actual danger that LCH provides, especially compared to actual dangers.

You are an ignorant fool!.. If you mean "Diversity of Life", that would be Theory of Evolution. If you meant "Origin of life" that would be Abiogenesis. Do some research before you talk out of your ass or get an education.

And you are calling me ignorant with that type of language?. You are the one who needs education. Probably you do not posses the required intelligence to be civilized. Only monkeys smach each other.
