There is no catalog number concerning Sweelinck's pieces. But if that can help you, it's the first g minor monothematic fantasia, N
°3 in the Dover edition.

So, it's called the first g minor monothematic fantasia. That's it right? Monothematic meaning one theme obviously right? What's the theme? Anyone else can jump in if you know the answer.
The whole piece is ... ( 5 months ago by sbareg)
The whole piece is built like a fugue, with four independant voices. At the beginning, the melody we hear (d,f,g,a,b,a,d) is the theme, and is immediately repeated by the second voice, but upside down, like an inversed canon. Then, the theme remain omnipresent, treated in various manners like canons, but also augmentations (at 2:37, there are two voices, the long notes are the subject but slower) and diminutions (at 4:36, an inversed canon of the subjet with shorter notes).

Obviously you don't live in Amsterdam. He was even on our national Dutch banknotes with a value of 50 Euro before the Euro was introduced. To play Sweelinck on the piano is worse than playing Debussy on the electrical guitar. Horrible indeed although his Bach performances is a torture I will never forget

i'm tired of baroque purists slamming the piano. i'm sure Sweelinck would have loved to have played the piano. are you against electricity as well? a piano is an advancement in a unique line of percussive string instruments. i need not remind you that there have been many, in many forms.

The piano is not so much an advancement over the earlier keyboard instruments as some people just have bad opinions. I'm looking at you Folies. It just goes to show that people from any country can play the music of a country as well or better than people from that country.

yes certainly it may be wrong to call it an "advancement", i do prefer the piano though. the thing is, you can't really play Debussy, Chopin or Beethoven on a harpsichord. i love what the piano does for baroque music, and in particular what Glenn Gould does for baroque music. i can understand why many people hate him. he was outrageous at times. but unquestionably a virtuoso. if someone appreciates the rather unique expression behind this virtuosity i think is simply a matter of taste.
