I think it's a combination of age and smoking but most overall is simply the constant strain of touring. Look no further than Robert Plant. When comparing his voice in 1970 to 1976 and then 1979 it sounds like three completely different people, all from the strains of constant touring. Scott Weiland is another who is experiencing a loss of range. You can go to a concert for one night and lose your voice from yelling, these guys do it 20 days a month. That adds up.

First off, how do you know what I sound like? When most people read text in their head they use their own voice as a basis. I guess you're implying that you sound like shit. You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. Additionally, "Jeremy" is an incredible song, and when he performed it at other live events, it sounded great. This performance, however, has way too much vibrato, which makes him sound like shit. It takes away from the melody and lyrics of the song.

Agreed however it isn't just about singing at a varying ranges. It's vocal strain which typically occurs more from volume than pitch. Some voices simply hold up better than others. Vedder still sounds great but his voice definitely begins to break a lot easier than it once did. Constant touring will do that
