Northbound Metra Electric 316 pulls out of the Stony Island station at 71st St., headed toward Hyde Park and downtown. Two minutes later, outbound 315 rounds the curve and pulls into the station.
Metra's only electrified rail line was formerly the Illinois Central's commuter line. The 71st Street line is a branch of the main line, which runs from downtown Chicago to the south suburb of University Park. Its stations were briefly the only ones in the Metra rail system with turnstiles, unt
il a revolt by Metra Electric passengers prompted their removal. The people who live in that apartment building on the north side of 71st St. must have permanent tinnitus.

I'd have done my usual full-length drive, but there were fire trucks all over the place at Bennett. Ah, well, next weekend, for sure.

The crossing bells and the squealing of those wheels should be warning enough. I don't know how the people who live near here stand it. And there's new houses going up!

They never honk at these crossings. I've heard Metra Electric trains honk less than twenty times.

The South Chicago Branch is cool! I have a lot of good pics from about 1994-1995, which includes the old decrepid station at South Shore Drive. They've been slowly replacing the old ones on this line.

I wonder how long will it takes from O'Hare Airport to Union Station... I don't want to miss the Amtrak train to Indy!
By taxi, anywhere ... ( 3 months ago by artistmac)
By taxi, anywhere from 45 minutes normally to an hour and a half to two hours if it's raining or if there's been an accident. The Blue Line el train and 151 Sheridan bus can be faster, but check the CTA's website before you come. Last time I rode it on the weekend (a month ago), they were working on the tracks and running shuttle buses between the Rosemont and Jefferson Park stations.

I'm frugal; I'll pay $1.75 for the Blue Line, even with a shuttle bus. If you've got a lot of luggage, you might want to opt for the taxi ($35-40 to downtown). I'm not sure whether Continental Transport still operates their vans from O'Hare -- the fare, five years ago, was about $16.

when the first train left the station, was it my imagination, or did a see a crossing gate blocking the sidewalk?

You certainly did. And the way it's drooping, it's not much of a barrier to a pedestrian determined to commit suicide.
