I don't think the middle tpt player is Cootie. Cootie plays pretty downstream hornwise - that's an embouchure thing, and my guess he would have been playing that way in 1930 as well. How bout a very young Harry Carney on Bari - plays the snot out of it! Great clip!!!

I guess you're right - he did join in '29.. he just ended up being a downstream player (pointed his horn toward the floor) I guess his playing position and embouchure changed as he got older.

Cootie started out as a dead level open trumpet player, and lots of his solos in the thirties are in that mode. He aimed the horn down when doing plunger-mute or "growl" trumpet. The middle player here is, positively, Williams.
