Is the point of this intro, by showing the people laughing in circumstances where one would not usually be happy, reveals how, throughout our lives, the facade of society hides the unpleasantness of this world? If not then this intro confuses me.

you got it exactly right. I see it as: No matter how much as we try to attempt laughing tragic things off, to try and seem "happy" about what had happened, (that it doesn't bother you) you'll still be upset on the inside and things may get worse.

From what I understand of this anime, and as it's displayed very well in this intro, life can be bad and there will be unchangeable circumstances. But you have to learn to face it and overcome such obstacles, that's how they beat lil Slugger, by facing that which they were afraid of.

I seriously loved this anime. When I saw the first promo for it on Adult Swim in the U.S I was like , "Man....I gotta check this out."

Generally..One of the best anime story and themes I've ever seen! This Anime was amazing! Mostly though, You can't take the physical representation of Lil Slugger seriously, it is the escape in which all society falls victim to when the mind and material ideal cannot conform! I love this intro..Speaks so well for the theme!
