You are absolutely right that it depends what you're looking for -- and often on mood. I like all sorts of voices -- everything from Paul Robeson to Thomas Otten -- and I like unusual voices, like Mary Travis'. I prefer the PP&M version on the basis of voice rather than emotion. I do like Lightfoot and, as I understand it, he was no stranger to pain.
To answer your PS, I've been 'there', but not, thankfully, all at the one time. Perhaps that's why the words don't resonate.
